Smithsonian Institution Hosts the Horse

The Smithsonian Institute will be opening a traveling exhibit on October 29, 2011 in conjunction with the Washington International Horse Show. The exhibit, visiting from the Heye Center in New York, is a critically acclaimed exhibition exploring the relationship between Native Americans and horses.

Members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, the Fairfax County Park Authority Board and the Founders, Benefactors, Supervisors and Friends of Frying Pan Farm Park joined park staff, equestrian enthusiasts and community members for a ribbon cutting ceremony marking the official opening of new equestrian facilities at Frying Pan Farm Park on Saturday, May 22, 2010.
Vienna, VA, June 23, 2008 – Fairfax4Horses, a local non-profit organization, is pleased to announce that the Fairfax County Park Authority has approved funding for the construction of a riding ring and parking lot at Laurel Hill Park in Lorton. . The improvements will be paid for with funding from the 2004 Park Authority Bond Construction Fund and proffers offered by developers in the Lorton area. Fairfax4Horses, whose mission is to bring horseback riding back to Fairfax County, has been working closely with the Park Authority to plan an equestrian center at Laurel Hill Park.

Frying Pan Park, which has an indoor arena used for equestrian and other events, is well known for its farm animals, hayrides, and annual 4-H fair. “Offering a riding lesson program at one of our park facilities is a first for the county, and reaction has been very positive,” said Tawny Hammond, director of Frying Pan Park. Announced just a week before it began, the program is filled to capacity and has a waiting list for the next several sessions.
